WHAT IS sHATARANJI?

The colorful carpet 'Shataranji' is the oldest art and glorious tradition of Rangpur district of Bangladesh. As far as is known from history, it was highly esteemed in the houses of kings and emperors. Shataranji was used in the court of Mughal Emperor Akbar. At that time, Shataranji was considered as a symbol of nobility in the houses of kings and emperors. Shataranji gained so much popularity during the British rule that Shataranji made here was exported to all over the world including India, Burma, Sinhala, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia.

"Shataranji Knitting" is the oldest weaving industry in the world today. Interestingly, there is no mechanical use in the production of this product. Shataranji is made by hand-designing each yarn by counting the number of yarns prepared by pulling the yarn on the ground with only bamboo and rope. Beacuse it is hand made a single Shataranji of any size will not going to be as same as the previous one as so each of is unique on its own. Its beauty and durability are worth mentioning.
